Summery Papaya

The other day I was reading an article published in Reader’s Digest magazine about health benefits of papaya fruit and later realized that indeed i love eating this tropical fruit. I started eating Papaya on a regular basis long time back after one of my friends K. revealed the secret of her glowing skin. Her morning breakfast consists of papaya, oats and lots of water. Not sure about my skin but I do realize that I love eating papaya during summers.

During my hunger pangs, just few bites of it and I get satisfied… guess that’s because of the water content present in Papaya. Saves me from grabbing a pack of chips.

When buying papaya, choose slightly tender papayas with orange skin. If you are buying a greenish fruit, keep it outside and don’t refrigerate. The fruit will ripe fast.

Being from marketing, I feel that this fruit needs more eaters and a good marketing strategy. Just like those overly priced Washington (waxed) apples or Florida oranges that come with manuals. Now who needs manuals on fruits?

Some facts that you can’t ignore

Ripe papaya is not only rich in beta-carotene (vitamin A) but also full of vitamin C and E supply. Not just this but it also contains antioxidants that decreases risk of heart disease, some cancers, and fades wrinkles. Stop buying anti-aging creams like O**y and eat papaya. Not only this but it also improves digestive system, strengthens nails, and hair. High amount of Folate present in this tropical fruit aids in cell production and helps prevent anemia.

Update: Deepa has posted papaya and vermicili halwa on her blog. You can read it here

Just a quick note: Washington, DC doesn't grow anything.

You're thinking of Washington state which is on the other side of the US.

And I'm not sure what the "comes with manuals" reference is about. We don't get manuals when buying them here.

Woah, look what I've found. The whole encyclopedia of recipes. Makes me so hungry. I was really drooling over this stuffed mushroom recipe you had prepared. Awesome pics. Thankfully I stopped myself from licking the comp screen. Munchmany said you still live behind my office. Someday I have to invite myself over for dinner.

Your post is an excellent reminder about the unlimited wonders of papaya - Papaya Unlimited :-) I will try it the next time I am hungry for chips!! I have always loved the fruit in any case; it is the most refreshing fruit I have tasted. Speaking of papaya recipes, in Bengali cooking - an exotic sweet chutney is made out of raw papayas in syrup. It is extremely yummy, I still have the taste in my mouth but unfortunately have no idea about the method of preparation!

You know, I have heard one more interesting fact about papayas from my mother..... in olden days when there was no pressure cooker, people used to put papaya chunks into the food items that took time to thaw! So papayas aid the thawing process in other food stuff.

Hey, i have seen those stickers too. Back in Chennai, when i used to hunt for some apples, the Pazhamudir Cholai store and some other stores like that used to store shiny apples with a bright orange sticker with Washington DC printed on them.

You are talking abt the same ones right?

Munchmany - Try papaya sorbet that you can get in CCD. It's amazing.

Raj Bala - Thanks for coming by and correcting me. The apples that I have referred on my post has a tiny sticker on each apple that says Washington. People in India would have seen such apples for sure in fruit markets.
The manual and poster that comes along with apple crates talks about how to cut apples right or how to store them.I think it's a part of their marketing strategy.

JJ - Thanks for checking my blog. The blog is not an encyclopedia yet but I'm flattered :). Visit us anytime, will be happy to serve you.

Deepa - I'm eagerly waiting for your recipes. You can even post it on your blog and I'll link this post to yours.

Ambrosia - Thank you for such an informative comment. Please ask your mom to post the mentioned chutney in her blog. Would love to try it. Raw papaya paste is even used in non- veg marination. I think it has tenderizing properties.

My colleagues keep arguing with me about the benefits this humble fruit can offer. Wait till I show this to them.
